The Sport of Pigeon Racing

The sport of pigeon racing is a part of my soul. I am a natural competitor. My history includes semi-professional football and baseball to mention a few venues of competition. I am also an animal lover, enjoying horses, dogs, cats, fish, hamsters and birds of all kinds. So my love of competition coupled with the most beautiful of all winged creatures, pigeons, has brought me to this excellent sport.

Participating in this sport will teach you husbandry, responsibility, research, carpentry, time management and patience.

In addition:

-You learn to care for and maintain the optimal health of your flock which is the primary key to keeping that competitive edge that allows you to win.

-You have the responsibility of daily feeding, watering, and cleaning the pigeon's home to create a well light, healthy environment.

-In creating the best team, it is important to research not only the best feed, supplements, style of training methods but also what best motivates your birds to home.

-To design and construct a home for your beloved birds, often out of scrap material and perused lumber that supports the style of racing you have chosen, becomes in a word their 'loft'.

-To set aside time for the proper feeding and training and create a system that works for the individual as pigeons are some of the most adaptable of all God's creatures.

-And most importantly of all patience, in your breeding schedules to allow the pairs to bond, in your raising of 'squeakers' to make sure they are fed and cared for by their parents, in the training of young birds by choosing the best time and place for their training tosses and in the care of mature birds for their daily maintenances.

After all these skills are mastered it comes down to the birds themselves. The feel of a well developed pigeon, the tight painted on look of their feathers, the clarity and color in the eyes, the broad strong muscular back and silky like texture all indicate your work has led to the ultimate athlete, full of health and vigor, with a real shot at the gold.

If you are even tempted to participate in this most excellent sport, get yourself the best breeders your pocketbook can handle, build a fine loft, research a good diet and choose a regime of training and sit back to enjoy that wonderful moment when your flock clocks in at the fastest time ever.
